Economic role of the government Essay

Financial frameworks are recognized by how they answer the three inquiries of what, how, and for whom to deliver. The financial frameworks exist on a continuum, with order economies on one side and the free markets on the opposite side. The United States has a free market economy however with an eminent measure of government mediation, along these lines it has a blended economy. Thanksgiving Grumbling or Gratitude

When I initially think of Thanksgiving, my thoughts go straight to my stomach. My mouth starts watering as I picture gravy dripping off my turkey and onto the rich, fluffy stuffing. Yum! I wait all year for this day, and when it’s finally here—wow!—do I have something to be thankful for. Unfortunately, this attitude of thankfulness mostly seems to be contingent on the delicious meal my mother makes each year, although I also make an effort to be thankful for the family surrounding me. Now that I’m away at college, I admit I sometimes struggle a bit to feel thankful for them, though, because it seems that everyone wants to know what my grades are, how my friends are, and what horrible food I’ve been eating. They wear me out. Stuffing myself with a mouthful of turkey and cranberries helps keep the questions at bay. Still, it’s true—I am very thankful for both my family and the food, even though I may not show it. I wonder, however, about the rest of the year. Does my thankfulness extend all year long? Am I truly thankful for all the daily blessings provided for me? Do I consciously recognize them at all? It’s so easy to mumble an answer to my inquisitive relatives with a roll still between my teeth instead of feeling true gratitude for their presence. That’s unfortunate. Grumbling, mumbling, and complaining are some of the easiest habits I slip into as I go about daily life, yet during the Thanksgiving season, I instead wrap myself up in a temporary feeling of gratitude. The truth is, the more I complain, the more I dwell on the negative. Having an attitude of gratitude instead makes all the difference. When I am grateful for whatever comes my way, I find it easier to find peace with unpleasant situations. It’s less about passivity and more about acceptance and realizing that, as Lucius Annaeus Seneca put it, "A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man perfected without trials." Breaking the habit of complaining and grumbling makes us better people. When I complain, I tend to get more worked up about the situation. Negativity begets negativity. We should constantly strive to build up each other and set a good example for our kids, friends, and relatives. Thanksgiving isn’t just about being grateful for one day out of the year or scarfing down delicious food. The Thanksgiving season is an opportunity to remind ourselves to fight the urge to complain and to remember that gratitude is a lifestyle. Instead of avoiding my curious relatives’ questions, I choose to be grateful for the opportunity to share a bit of my life experiences with them. But please, pass the stuffing, too!    Nick Buscemi  has been associated with IEW since childhood when his father began working for the company. The corporate employer Free Essay Example, 3250 words

2. Managerial prerogative and protection of employment 2.1 Protection of employment in general As noticed above, managers in modern firms have to face a series of challenges when attempting to restructure their firm’s operational sectors. The size of the firm is a criterion for choosing the appropriate measures; however, there are also other issues that are taken into considerations by managers before proceeding to the above initiative. In this context, the following issues have been found to be important criteria for the development of strategic plans of foreign firms that operate in Britain: ‘a) international staffing, b) international recruitment and c) a variety of issues surrounding the problem of shortages in international managers’ (Scullion, 1994, 86). The possible intervention of unions in the completion of a specific plan of change within modern organizations is also taken into account by corporate managers around the world. The above issue was examined by Oesch (2006) who tried to identify the main characteristics of the re-structuring scheme ad opted by firms operating in Sweden, Germany and Britain. Through the above study it was proved that ‘the schema successfully captures the hierarchical dimension in the class structure; results for party support and union membership suggest that the schema grasps a salient horizontal cleavage between managers and sociocultural professionals’ (Oesch, 2006, 263). We will write a custom essay sample on The corporate employer or any topic specifically for you Only $17.96 $11.86/page The ability of unions to intervene in the decisions taken by managers – including the unfair dismissal of employees – is then expected to be differentiated. The above view is also supported by Brewster (1995, 3) who noticed that ‘trade union membership and influence varies considerably by country; Sweden has union membership of 85% of the working population, the U. K. around 40% and even in the least unionised countries such as Switzerland, 23%, and France, 12%, union membership is above that in the U. S.A. ’. Unions have a significant role in the development of the various aspects of employment policies and for this reason their role in the decrease of the phenomenon of unfair dismissal should be characterized as significant; in fact the higher the union membership existing in a specific country the higher the expected protection offered to the employees in all industrial sectors from a potential unfair dismissal.

The Fight For Separation From Great Britain s...

The fight for separation from Great Britain’s condescending control was engendered by the era of intellectual thinking as well as corrupt economical and political institutions, which ultimately paved the way for the birth of an independent United States. Enlightenment thinkers such as John Locke and Benjamin Franklin inspired the colonists to delve into the problems in British rule, as well as to reconsider the value of their natural rights. Additionally, Britain’s ongoing quarrels with the Native American people as well as British financial issues with accumulating parliamentary debt caused further infuriation within the colonies. Most importantly, the colonists’ lack of representation in Parliament catalyzed boycotts, protests, and the revolution itself. Intellectual advances stemming from the Great Awakening and Enlightenment era allowed colonists to think and reflect on British rule. The Enlightenment movement, during the late 17th and 18th centuries, emphasi zed reason and individualism. The strong ideas of John Locke quickly spread to the colonies through published pamphlets, and he argued that the legislative power must â€Å"... not raise taxes on the property of the people, without the consent of the people†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Locke, 2). Locke’s ideas influenced colonists to believe that Britain’s taxes on manifold items were corrupt, as the taxes were imposed without the approval of the colonists. Locke’s arguments ignited and supported the colonists’ complaints, and therefore madeShow MoreRelatedInstitution as the Fundamental Cause of Long Tern Growth39832 Words   |  160 PagesHandbook of Economic Growth edited by Philippe Aghion and Steve Durlauf. Task 2 2.1 Scope, Importance and Legal Framework of HRM HRM is an integral part of any business organization. Without proper human resource, the functioning of an organization will cease to exist. The scope of Human Resource Management is vast and extensive (Machado and Davim, 2014). Methods of managing and resolving employee conflict have been stated below: 1. Conflict increases when employees are given more opportunity to speak their mind. This must be controlled. 2. Cautious steps should be taken when politics comes into the picture. 3. Initiatives can be taken to transform a difficult employee into a friendly one and make him comply with the set rules (Zvavahera, 2015). 4. Investigating the issue informally and handling it with care and empathy can also be of help. 5. Improving the manner of communication with the employees. 6. The poets have described the ending of childhood innocence Essay Example For Students

The poets have described the ending of childhood innocence Essay Poems can capture important moments in our lives Discuss how the poets have described the ending of childhood innocence in at least two poems you have studied. I am going to analyse two poems which share the theme of the end of the era of childhood and children growing up. The poems are Mid-term Break by Seamus Heaney and In Mrs Tilschers Class by Carol Ann Duffy. Each of the poets reflects on memories from childhood concerning important events which took place and marked the end of childhood as they knew it. Seamus Heaney is a Northern Irish poet, from a traditional Irish background, which I feel I can relate to. Heaney was born in N Ireland in Co Londonderry and later studied English at Queens University in Belfast. Throughout his poetry, colloquial words and typical Northern Irish phrases are used, which produce a response not only in a reader like myself who shares his cultural background, but also those from differing cultural backgrounds, as evidenced in the worldwide popularity of his poetry. We will write a custom essay on The poets have described the ending of childhood innocence specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Carol Ann Duffy is a very successful Scottish poet from Glasgow. She was born in 1955 and is known for writing simple, easily understood pieces of literature. In the past she has given public readings of her own poetry, which have proved popular with the audience, in particular the great enthusiasm with which she reads. Mid-term Break is a poem filled with sad phrases and negativity, concerning the death of Heaneys four year old brother. The death of Heaneys young brother left a great impact on Heaney, as he himself was still a school boy. His family were also devastated at the death of such a young child. Heaney states, In the porch I met my father crying. In the opening paragraphs of each poem, there is a contrast of feelings as each of the poets thinks back to memories of how each experienced school. Carol Ann Duffy describes how the teacher Mrs Tilscher is able to engage the children with Geography, for example, chanted the scenery, Tana, Ethopia, Khartoum, Aswan. That for an hour,. . This shows the effect that Mrs Tilscher had as a teacher, that Carol Ann Duffy was able to sit in a classroom and listen for one hour. In contrast to Duffys opening memories, Heaneys first lines are filled with anxiety as he sits all morning in the college sick bay, Counting bells knelling classes to a close. Heaney uses alliteration here to emphasise the idea of a funeral.

Dressy Clothes Personal Statement Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Dressy Clothes - Personal Statement Example You too, also feel pleased with yourself because of all the positive reinforcement gained by the approval of others. Often, what we wear is a reflection of what we feel. At the very least, people think that our clothes reflect what we feel. For example, many folks who are mourning a death wear black for a period of time. When we see a person in mourning wear we are automatically sympathetic and treat them with more sensitivity. When we see someone who is nattily dressed in public, we tend to avoid any acquaintance. Sometimes our reactions are subconscious but nevertheless, the reactions do happen. For this assignment, I went out shopping and treated myself to some new items. I confidently wore my new outfits for four days in a row and must admit that I frankly, was rather pleased with myself. I found that people were more outgoing towards me and I found myself with more confidence. I found that I was more apt to initiate conversations rather than respond to them. I had a desire to expose myself more and be more social then before. I found that I smiled readily and there was a certain new confidence in my walk. It was almost a stride. Most notably, my friends and family were highly appreciative my new fashions and encouraged me to keep exploring my new look. All of this really made me good about myself. In some places I went, people commented on my outfit in a positive way and that made me feel even better and my ego increased. It made a difference not with me, but my husband joined me in this assignment. He too went out and bought a few new items for himself and wore them the same time that I was wearing mine. He too was also complimented by friends and family. Perhaps the most rewarding part was that my husband and myself also found ourselves looking at each other differently. We have always respected one another and admired each other but I found myself looking at him the way I did when we first met. I also found that I was so proud to be standing next to this impeccably dressed may and he felt the same way. Needless to say we have resolved to maintain our new looks! Since then I perceive him differently and I feel the same from him. I feel closer to him and my friends are complimenting me often. From now on I intend to be more

Do Markets Emerge or Are They Created By Firms Essay

Do Markets Emerge or Are They Created By Firms - Essay Example Whether by accident or design, when a firm appropriately guesses a latent need and develops novel offerings addressing unmet needs, new markets are created. Though innovative firms are not always profitable, new markets add value to society, and firm’s primary target is to capture some part of that value by exploratory strategies (Jacobides, 2003). The various mechanisms through which firms profit from their own activities associated with new product development include product features to attract buyers, price inelastic new markets, substitution of existing products with cheaper products, and development of capabilities for adaptation. Variation causes further variation, and the creation of product categories and process of organizational unbundling results in reduction of transaction costs setting grounds for new markets to be created (Anderson and Gatignon, 2005). Firms also create markets without developing new products through mere marketing and management activities, eve n for familiar products. For example, creation of outlets in disadvantaged regions creates new markets. The underlying principle to this concept is reducing transaction costs, and converting prospects into buyers (Anderson and Gatignon, 2005). ... The learning of consumers by using technologies or the change in consumption technology makes it very hard for firms to find or predict new markets on basis of merely abstract demand. Moreover, firms never rely on existing differences in tastes to develop markets, but strive hard to make tastes cohere transforming them into specific artifacts which may not always succeed eventually. Additionally, the arguments supporting creation of new markets through predicting demand are unable to justify the development of certain products and not others. Competition should result in firms converging to same product designs. Instead, there is enormous variation as observed in real markets (Sarasvathy and Dew, 2005). Firms own assets or have control over them, and ownership is the power which allows effective exercise of that control (Grossman and Hart, 1986). The major benefit of ownership is that it allows flexibility over decision-making and firm’s adaptability to changing environments ( Madhok, 2006). Ownership is regarded as one of the key variables in determining the performance or outcome of a firm. Research reveals that a positive relationship exists between managerial ownership and performance until a certain threshold level of ownership concentration. Beyond the threshold, performance may decline as managers often take advantage of the shared benefit of control to pursue their own interests and strategies (Neumann and Voetmann, 2003). The performance of firms tends to decline when ownership and control are separated, and increase with competition. However, firms having employee managers usually show better performance than owner managers in various sectors because owner managers inherit estates

Art Reflecting Conditions Of A Society Essay

All throughout history art has thrived in most prospering civilizations. These works of art are very often expressed the political, social, and economic conditions of the time period in which they were created. The Egyptian pyramids and the Gothic Cathedrals are the epitome of works of art that express political, social, and economic conditions. The Egyptian pyramids date back to Ancient Egypt from 3200 B.C- 500 B.C. The Ancient Egyptians created these pyramids for many reasons. They reflected many aspects of their lives, including economically, socially, and politically. These pyramids were tombs for the pharaohs, which were associated with all aspects of the Egyptians lives. The pharaohs were the heads of the political system; they were also looked up to as religious figures. They were seen as gods. They were obviously at the top of the social class, as well. These huge monuments and pyramids show just how much the people worshipped these pharaohs. The building of these pyramids also show that the Egyptians were doing well economically. If they weren’t doing well economically, then they wouldn’t have all that time to build such vast pyramids. They also wouldn’t have all those people to do that labor of building these huge pyramids. This is one work of art that has survived many years in the desert and still expresses many aspects of its time period. The pyramids do not stand alone in being an old work of art that shows many different aspects from the time period in which it was built. The Gothic cathedrals also stand tall today in places in Europe like Paris and Italy. These cathedrals were built during the medieval times. The Notre Dame cathedral is just one example of these cathedrals that had high pointed arches, flying buttresses, spires, and high vaulted ceilings. These cathedrals are a great example of how life was during the Middle Ages, socially, economically, and politically. The cathedrals were built as monuments to God. Religion was the ruling force during the Middle Ages and therefore it effected all aspects of life. The head of the government was the church. The church also ran the economy. The social structure during the middle ages was also structured according to the church. The high clergy and priests were the rich ones that prospered economically, socially, and politically. The building of these great cathedrals also show how prosperous  their economy was because if not they would not have all the supplies and labor to build these huge Gothic C athedrals. The Egyptian pyramids and the Gothic Cathedrals are two great works of art and architecture that have helped people of today learn about the social, economic, and political conditions of their time periods. A work of art is not just a beautiful thing to look at, it can also show people many things about the time period in which it was created. This has helped many historians and archaeologists, learn much about the civilizations in the past, dating back to as far as 3200 B.C. during Ancient Egypt.

Reasons For the Annexation of Texas Essay - 2485 Words

Reasons For the Annexation of Texas The Annexation of Texas was one of the most debatable events in American history. The question at hand would deeply impact the United States for generations to come. There was on one side a long list of reasons for why to not allow annexation, but there was the same kind of list on the other side for reasons to push forward for annexation. Some of these reasons of both sides were slaves, war, manifest destiny, politics , and constitutional rights. One of the major voices against annexations was ex-president, John Quincy Adams. He was at that time a member of the House of Representatives. Near the close of the session for that year, Adams made a three weeks’ address in opposition to annexation. He is quoted in his diary for saying â€Å"The annexation of Texas to the Union is the First maritime, colonizing, slave-tainted monarchy, and of extinguishment of freedom†(Wharton). For fear of the northerns’’ and abolitionists, neither Jackson or Van Buren dared to push hard for annexation. Though the reasons for ending slavery were not their prime concern. If Texas was admitted into the union the new slave state would wreck the hard won balance of slave and free states in the Senate. Thus giving the south an advantage over the north. The abolitionists believed that this would eventually lead to the south pushing for laws inferior of their ways of life, being new slave laws, and disunion in the country.(Haley) Once Texas is annexed its territory could become as many as 11 new slave states with 22 new pro-slavery senators. Hitler who was Fuhrer for Germany is infamous for his doings in World War II and his killing of Jewish people. We will write a custom essay sample on World History: The Worst Dictator of Them All or any similar topic only for you Order Now Then there is Stalin who caused the great terror in USSR and used cunning schemes to achieve his goals and was a key person during the Cold War. Finally there is Mao Zedong the great Chinese revolutionist who fought against the Chinese Nationalist Party and changed China in many ways using many social and economic policies. I will be judging â€Å"worst dictator† by the amount of death, social and economic problems caused during their rule and will also consider the rise to their power as a basis to judge these three dictators. I will be giving worst dictator to whoever has the most death and worst social and economic problems considering their position. In the social and economic problems caused it will be mainly be the leader create talking about policies and whether or not it was successful or not. I will also take in the consideration of propaganda used by dictators to influence the people’s trust. Firstly, Mao Zedong the President of the People’s Republic China or formerly known Chairman of the People’s Republic China started out to be a mere librarian working in a Chinese college. He then joins the Chinese communist party that rebels against the existing ruling Nationalist party in China, the KMT. Mao led his rebels across china fighting and running away from the KMT. However in October 1st of 1949 he creates the People’s Republic of China and turns China into communist. Many Chinese liked and followed him due to his status as legendary revolutionist who bettered the poor and fought for the people who could not fight. In 1958, he sets out to do the Great Leap Forward, which was simply put a 5-year plan type of scheme where the goal was to modernize China radically. This reformation involved large agricultural communes and about 75,000 farmers, these communes did their own collective farms and families. Following Marxist principles all wages were equally shared amongst the families in the commune. Each family also received a small strip of land. However by 1962 this reformation stopped due to Soviet Union could not afford to back up China and this failure caused Mao to resign from his post as Chairman of PRC. Many had died of starvation and about 50 million died at this point. Even though he resigned Mao was openly still playing politics, in 1966 he would start an initiative called the Great Cultural Revolution. This was totally against what Mao had installed when he was Chairman, he took away all forms of freedom of speech and had installed many Marxist ideas that were implied by Soviet Union. After the critics finished criticizing the government and Mao, he gathered up college students and made them attack the critics. Proclaiming that these student body were the Red Guard, who had a responsibility to protect China, Mao started ordering unexplainable orders. During this time there was a politician by the name of Liu Shiaoqi who had notions of wage differentiation and freedom of speech. Mao gave out orders such as banning education, never to consider intellectuals as superiors, and killed roughly around 78 million Chinese people by this time (including Tibet incident). However this was all indirect killing. He then gave almost all his power to the Gang of Four who caused many troubles and the Chinese public despised them. Everyone liked Mao even though he killed so many people and caused so many disturbances. His image as great revolutionary leader is still believed today by many Chinese people and much of his wrongdoings is erased from Chinese history. Mao Zedong’s points are his mass murder of his own people and destruction of class system, which caused many problems, while rising to power his cunning ideas and tactics are admirable, and he always fought for the peasants at all times which is considered as a good thing. Even though he killed many people all these killings were accidental or more like unplanned. He also had a cult of personality, which still exists today. Next is Josef Stalin the General secretary of the Central Committee of the communist Party. This man succeeded Lenin who was the leader of USSR and first ever man to successfully implement communism into a country and was considered a Great revolutionist. He rose to power from his position as a secretary of the party to Leader of USSR by using Lenin’s cult of personality and pretending to be number one disciple. He would team up with his opponents who wanted his position against one main army then change up his teams. In this way he would always be on the winning side and his opponents never considered him a big threat, in this way he tricked and conned his way to become one of the most ruthless leaders USSR has ever seen. After his consolidation of power he soon worked on getting rid of all opponents and all future opponents. He first got rid of Leon Trotsky who was Lenin’s second in command to Mexico. Then one by one he got rid of all intellectuals in USSR. Soon he was the only one in USSR with any proper intellect. This purge of Intellectuals depleted USSR’s brainpower completely. After getting rid of the brainpower in USSR he started to implements plan to modernize USSR. His goal was to be able to stand side by side against the Capitalist nations. You read "World History: The Worst Dictator of Them All" in category "Papers" To achieve these goals he used death camps called Gulags to maintain a rigid control over all counterrevolutionary actions. Then killed the kulak, landlords who owned farm property, and then killed any peasants have any success. In this way Stalin created a mass famine, which killed 23,000,000 people. Unlike Mao, he did this on purpose due to his fear of counterrevolutionaries and opposition to his power. While Stalin boasted that USSR was having successful economic situations during the Great depression in America parts of Ukraine did not have food and many died. After this incident, he acted a major part in ending the World War II. They defeated the Nazis who invaded European country. However Stalin ordered Russian army to stay put in the country they had just liberated from the Nazis. In this way he was able to procure Satellite states. In the Tehran and Yalta meetings amongst the Big Three, he was able to argue equally amongst Churchill and Roosevelt. In this way he was allowed to keep satellite states however the next American president and Stalin did not get along as well. Eventually Cold war started and Stalin implemented mass production of arms. He died on 1953. Even though his methods were harsh he was able to modernize USSR into a world power that was at one point equal to America. Stalin is still considered as a hero amongst some Russians, this is mainly due to history books in Russia do not talk about Stalin’s misdeeds. His misguided methods were very harsh however it produced results, which Stalin sought for. His mass murder of 23,000,000 people was done on purpose unlike Mao, which makes him a very scary man. Stalin’s personality was one of a calculative and methodical almost like a serial killer. He wanted to satisfy his own goals, which was to be better than the Capitalist nation, mainly America. Stalin’s points are that he killed many people during the modernization of USSR, his cunning methods when he was rising to power, his method to spread communism by using satellite states, and he also made USSR into a Super Power. His successor Nikita had to use De-Stalinization due to Stabilize USSR and make sure it was a safer place to be in. Finally, Adolf Hitler the most famous mass murder and mastermind behind World War II. His genocide of Jewish people is famous amongst all people. He was a painter in Vienna before he formed the Nazi party. He looked for rich patrons to support his work but the Jewish patrons, most patron are Jewish. However they all rejected him and his hatred towards Jewish people started to grow. He then joins a political party and later on forms the Nazi party. He becomes the leader of this party and leads the Beer Hall Putsch in 1923. He was arrested in this event and then held at prison for 5 years. He wrote his book â€Å"Mein Kampf † and starts to scheme political methods to get his revenge on the Jews. His pride as Germans started rising and he became very Nationalistic after the Great depression which caused the Germany to fall down with America due to the huge debts owed by Germany given out by America. This was to pay war reparations to other countries, from World War I. Hitler saw this as a sign of weakness on America’s part and started to do special speeches to the German people using carefully rehearsed speeches. In this way the Nazi party was elected to German Reichstag. Soon Hitler massed enough influence to become Chancellor of Germany and switched took over instead for democracy he becomes the Dictator of Germany and creates a one party state. Soon he felt compelled to take back what was rightfully German and took back Rhineland. Then soon took Austria, next came Czechoslovakia and then the other European nations started to feel threatened and attacked Germany. This was the start to World War II however before all this when Hitler was just the President of Germany he used his SS to destroy and harass all Jewish people and objects. He used terms as sub-human and started the mass genocide of Jews in Europe, this lead to about twelve million Jews dead. Hitler was a very nationalistic person and could not be considered sane considering the fact that he took revenge by climbing to the top most position in Germany which he used to say he was against and then killing twelve million innocent Jews are serial killer kind of actions. His points are his sudden rise to power and he was just plain crazy. As a dictator he was just crazy compared to the other two dictators. I think the worst dictator goes to Mao Zedong, due to mass murder of seventy-eight million people and being a former intellectual but still destroying all beings proclaiming to be intelligent is beyond comprehension. Even though he wanted to modernize China and help out the peasants and make everyone equal, there is no point in destroying the education system and making a group of people suffer just to make another group happy. Also the fact that he was a former librarian just makes it all the worse he should have realized the value in having intelligent people. Unlike Hitler who was crazy I think Mao Zedong as he became older became senile and dumb which is why he started the Great Cultural Revolution. Also even though his actions before becoming Chairman of China was very calculative after he became Chairman of China he seems to lack importance to life. He does not care about how many people die just for his policies to work. Which just shows a crazy person or a sick person’s mind. However I believe he just turned senile and slowly lost his edge. Baby Eye Testing Essay Research Paper U free essay sample

Baby Eye Testing Essay, Research Paper U OF T PROFESSORS DEVISE BETTER WAY TO TEST SIGHT IN BABIES In a darkened room at Toronto # 8217 ; s Hospital for Sick Children, a babe, its caput dotted with electrodes, sits in its female parent # 8217 ; s lap and tickers blinking black and white checker boards and chevrons on a telecasting screen. Soon after the trial, physicians will cognize if the kid can see and how good it can see. The testing process, which involves mensurating encephalon moving ridge activity prompted by ocular stimulation ( besides called ocular elicited potencies or VEP # 8217 ; s ) has been perfected by Drs. Barry Skarf of the Department of Ophthalmology and Moshe Eizenman of U of T # 8217 ; s Institute Their process is more accurate than trials used elsewhere because Eizenman has developed a novel, real-time computing machine plan to pull out encephalon wave responses from highly little forms ( similar in size to the bottom line of a standard oculus trial ) which produce much more dependable conseque nces. We will write a custom essay sample on Baby Eye Testing Essay Research Paper U or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Until now, physicians would hold to generalize the babe # 8217 ; s ability to see little stimulations from trial consequences utilizing big stimulations. # 8220 ; In Effect, Dr. Eizenman has developed a manner of looking at encephalon moving ridges that is more sensitive than methods antecedently available, # 8221 ; says Skarf. At the HSC, VEP # 8217 ; s are used in a figure of clinical applications: to find whether a ocular job is cognitive ; to measure whether babes who don # 8217 ; t appear to see good will see better in the hereafter ; to find a class of intervention for such jobs in which one oculus turns in or is weaker than the other oculus. The 2nd facet of the research workers # 8217 ; work involves the development of a stimulator for stereopsis, or binocular vision, which is the fusing of images from both ey es into one picture that has depth. â€Å"The problem with testing binocular vision, † explains Skarf, â€Å"is that most stimuli presented to young children have other cues that can be seen with one eye alone. We wanted to devise stimuli that can only be seen by both eyes together and would produce specific brain waves to the stimuli.† Based on a binocular stimulus invented by an American researcher, Eizenman had developed a stimulus that generates a pattern on a tv screen which looks like distortion (a snow storm) when viewed with only one eye, but when viewed through special glasses with both eyes emits a distinctive three- dimensional pattern. Skarf and Eizenman are now testing binocular VEP’s on young children. They are examining children with normal sight and evaluating eye function in children with visual disorders. This is the first test of binocular vision to be carried out with large numbers. â€Å"Using this binocular stimulus with the very sensitiv e detector system for analyzing responses, we hope to have a system which will allow us to test binocular vision in young babies, quickly and easily, and to measure responses in a better way than before.† In addition to this clinical research, Skarf now wants to direct his attention to some basic research questions about the development of vision. â€Å"We are interested in more than just developing tools. We want to know how binocular vision develops and which factors interfere with development. We want to find out what wheels turn in the brain to produce lazy eyes and impaired binocular vision.† Skarf and Eizenman receive funding from the Medical Research Council of Canada. Voice Loyalty Essay Example For Students

Voice Loyalty Essay Another key issue discussed in Exit, Voice, and Loyalty is loyalty and its effects upon an individual in a firm or organization. Hirschman cites that when choosing between voice and exit, a loyal person is less likely to exit. He asserts that the greater the degree of loyalty, the more voice will be used and the longer the time period that elapses before exit. Furthermore, Hirschman states that a loyal should use voice and the threat of exit in order to accomplish his goal and effect change. Another fundamental issue involved with loyalty is whether the individual remains with his struggling firm (thus demonstrating loyalty) as a sacrifice (because of dedication and commitment) or because of self-interest. It is most arguable that Senator Jeffords displayed a very negligible amount of loyalty due to self-interest and then exited on account of the same selfish reasoning. The first piece of evidence testifying to Jeffords limited loyalty was his refusal to negotiate with the Bush administration. We will write a custom essay on Voice Loyalty specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now The President and his staff offered Jeffords several compromises (and already planned to boost education spending by more than 513 billion dollars), all of which he deemed unacceptable because of their inconsistency with his personal goals regarding education reform. This unwillingness to compromise indicates and reinforces the existence of selfishness and ambition in the Senators agenda. Another factor alluding to Jeffords disloyalty is the absence of the threat of exit. In fact, the only people to whom he voiced his deliberations over leaving the GOP were the Democrats. Thus, his exit came as a surprise to the very people who it most profoundly affected, and their awareness was gained only after it was already too late for any preventative measures to be taken. Furthermore, despite the fact that Jeffords did express his views on the inside and before the tax legislature was passed-a typical demonstration of loyalty over ambition-in this instance voice was the only way for him to obtain his goals, which implies self-interest. The final and most convincing substantiation of Jeffords ambition and egotism is his incomplete exit. In a clear and obvious desire to further his own desires at any cost, before officially deciding upon or announcing his defection, the Senator bargained with the Democrats for a committee chairmanship so that he would not be forced to resign and leave the Senate. If he truly felt as strongly as he professes, why did he not have the courage to resign his House seat in Congress to stand for re-election as a Republican in a special election? Why didnt he prove his professed loyalty and decline the committee chairmanship promised him by Daschle? It appears as though Jeffords may perhaps need to reconsider the validity of some of his chief assertions.

The Most Abundant Types of Insect Fossils

The Most Abundant Types of Insect Fossils Since insects lack bones, they didnt leave behind skeletons for paleontologists to unearth millions of years later. How do scientists learn about ancient insects without fossilized bones to study? They examine the abundant evidence found in the different types of insect fossils described below. For the purpose of this article, weve defined a fossil as any preserved physical evidence of insect life from a time period prior to recorded human history. Preserved in Amber Much of what we know about prehistoric insects is derived from evidence trapped in amber, or ancient tree resin. Because tree resin is a sticky substance – think of a time when youve touched pine bark and come away with sap on your hands – insects, mites, or other tiny invertebrates would quickly become trapped upon landing on the weeping resin. As the resin continued to ooze, it would soon encase the insect, preserving its body. Amber inclusions date as far back as the Carboniferous period. Scientists can also find preserved insects in resin dated just a few hundred years old; these resins are called copal, not amber. Because amber inclusions form only where trees or other resinous plants grew, the insect evidence recorded in amber documents the relationship between ancient insects and forests. Put simply, insects trapped in amber lived in or near wooded areas. Studying Impressions If youve ever pressed your hand into a freshly poured bed of cement, youve created the modern equivalent of an impression fossil. An impression fossil is a mold of an ancient insect, or more often, a part of an ancient insect. The most durable parts of the insect, the hard sclerites, and wings, comprise the majority of impression fossils. Because impressions are just a mold of an object that was once pressed in the mud, and not the object itself, these fossils assume the color of the minerals in which they are formed. Typically, insect impressions include only a mold of the wing, frequently with sufficiently detailed wing venation to identify the organism to order or even family. Birds and other predators that might have eaten the insect would find the wings unpalatable, or perhaps even indigestible, and leave them behind. Long after the wing or cuticle has decayed, a copy of it remains etched in stone. Impression fossils date back to the Carboniferous period, providing scientists with snapshots of insect life from up to 299 million years ago. Compressions Some fossil evidence formed when the insect (or part of the insect) was physically compressed in sedimentary rock. In a compression, the fossil contains organic matter from the insect. These organic residues in the rock retain their color, so the fossilized organism is conspicuous. Depending on how coarse or fine the mineral comprising the fossil is, an insect preserved by compression may appear in extraordinary detail. Chitin, which makes up part of the insects cuticle, is a very durable substance. When the rest of the insect body decays, the chitinous components often remain. These structures, such as the hard wing covers of beetles, comprise most of the fossil record of insects found as compressions. Like impressions, compression fossils date back as far as the Carboniferous period. Trace Fossils Paleontologists describe dinosaur behavior based on their study of fossilized footprints, tail tracks, and coprolites – trace evidence of dinosaur life. Similarly, scientists studying prehistoric insects can learn a great deal about insect behavior through the study of trace fossils. Trace fossils capture clues to how insects lived in different geologic time periods. Just as hardened minerals can preserve a wing or cuticle, such fossilization can preserve burrows, frass, larval cases, and galls. Trace fossils provide some of the richest information about the co-evolution of plants and insects. Leaves and stems with obvious insect feeding damage comprise some of the most abundant fossil evidence. The trails of leaf miners, too, are captured in stone. Sediment Traps Younger fossils – if one can call 1.7 million-year-old fossils young – are recovered from sediment traps representing the Quaternary period. Insects and other arthropods immobilized in peat, paraffin, or even asphalt were entombed as layers of sediment accumulated over their bodies. Excavations of such fossiliferous sites often yield tens of thousands of beetles, flies, and other invertebrates. The La Brea tar pits, located in Los Angeles, is a famous sediment trap. Scientists there have excavated well over 100,000 arthropods, many of them carrion feeders that were preserved along with the large vertebrate carcasses on which they fed. Sediment traps provide scientists with more than a catalog of species from a certain geological time frame. Quite often, such sites also offer evidence of climate change. Many, if not most, of the invertebrate species found in sediment traps, are extant. Paleontologists can compare their fossil finds with the current known distributions of living species, and extrapolate information about the climate at the time those insects were entombed. Fossils recovered from the La Brea tar pits, for example, represent terrestrial species that inhabit higher elevations today. This evidence suggests the area was once cooler and moister than it is now. Mineral Replications In some fossil beds, paleontologists find perfect mineralized copies of insects. As the insects body decayed, dissolved minerals precipitated out of solution, filling the void left as the body disintegrated. A mineral replication is an accurate and often detailed 3-dimensional replica of the organism, in part or whole. Such fossils typically form in places where water is rich with minerals, so animals represented by mineral replications are often marine species. Mineral replications give paleontologists an advantage when excavating fossils. Because the fossil is usually formed of a different mineral than the surrounding rock, they can often dissolve the outer rock bed to remove the embedded fossil. For example, silicate replications can be extracted from limestone using an acid. The acid will dissolve the calcareous limestone, leaving the silicate fossil unscathed.
